SXSW Interactive: Exploring the Perhiphery

SXSW Interactive—or what I like to call it, “Geek Mardi Gras”—is over, and the dust is settling. Although there was no real central theme at this year’s SXSW Interactive conference, there were very interesting themes on the periphery of digital. It’s great that the conference curators are exploring the outside boundaries of “Interactive”.  It’s just that kind of attention to peripheral vision (and not a direct hit on traditional interactive) that will keep South-By relevant … [Read more...]

The Mobile Experience, Tables, Chairs and Screens

This post originally appeared on Chris Silva's MakeMobileWork blog. We talk a lot about screens these days, so much so that for me to type the word "table" without appending a "t" onto the end has become somewhat of a difficult task. That said, there's much talk about how it's important to converse with customers across the multiplying number of screens we interact with daily, but little thought given to what the experiences on each screen, each surface really are. In a meeting this week, … [Read more...]

New study: Deep brand engagement correlates with financial performance

I'm releasing today a new research report that I wrote in conjunction with Wetpaint called "ENGAGEMENTdb". The study looked at how the 100 most valuable brands -- as identified by the 2008 BusinessWeek/Interbrand Best Global Brands ranking -- engaged in 11 different online social media channels. We critiqued the brands on not only their breadth of engagement across these channels, but also their depth, such as whether they reply to comments made on blog posts. Each brand was given a numerical … [Read more...]

Skittles bravely lets social media take over the homepage, redefines branding

On Monday, Skittles changed it's home page over to emphasis social media, specifically a Twitter search for "skittles". I've included a screenshot of it (click on it to see it full size). The result: "#skittles" was the top trending topic on Twitter on Monday, and actually took Twitter down as the buzz spread. Skittles did a great job at dominating the Twitter conversation, especially for a candy. On Tuesday, the home page shifted to highlight Skittle's Facebook page. It will likely shift … [Read more...]

Best video that describes the state of social media marketing

I showed this video at my speech in Tempe last week and I got several requests for the link. This is one of my favorite videos that shows the disconnect that advertisers have with their customers. It really captures how advertisers see the world -- and how consumers are asking for a "divorce". One of the things I encourage marketers to think about is what kind of relationship they want to have with their customers -- and to consider what they have today. Is it transactional, … [Read more...]
