Ed Terpening leads a dual life, as a Senior Consultant at Altimeter Group, and as an accomplished artist. He has been quoted in media ranging from USA Today and American Banker to American Artist magazine.
As VP of Social Media at Wells Fargo, Ed led the charge to develop the first blog by any major US bank, their first blogger and the first dedicated social media team. He led social media strategy at Wells Fargo for 7 years. He is a founding member of SocialMedia.org.
Ed has a long history in Silicon Valley. At Apple he researched advanced software engineering approaches, and developed and taught courses there, winning “Teacher of the Year”. His team led the development of advanced data visualization tools and data warehouses. Ed joined then small Cisco Systems in ’93, a month before the first web browser hit the Internet. Within the hub of the emerging web, he managed Cisco’s first company-wide Intranet, their first e-commerce store, and managed development of Cisco.com, one of the first business sites on the Internet to offer online customer service.
At CNET, Ed held many positions in both technology and product development, including founding their first Online Community team. This team added the first social tools to CNET, including user ratings and reviews and “Talk Back” reader feedback on NEWS.com.
Outside of work, Ed is an award-winning artist. His accomplishments include a cover story in American Artist magazine, the largest art magazine in the US and contributions to The Complete Painters Handbook and Workshop for Professional Practices. He is on the Advisory Board of PleinAir Magazine. His artwork is in collections worldwide, including Christopher “Kip” Forbes.
