Teaching small-business owners that aren't tech savvy how to use Facebook as an advertising tool can be challenging, said Rebecca Lieb, an industry analyst at research firm Altimeter Group. Some mom-and-pop stores are used to advertising in the classifieds or in the Yellow Pages, where there is more handholding and communication with sales reps, she said.

"This requires new knowledge and skill sets that local businesses don't necessarily have," Lieb said.
